i need a new 'puter

so my computer completely crashed when i started it after work today. to the point where i had to reinstall every single program other than windows.
it seemed like it could be virus induced, but what do i know - right?
so i'm in the lengthy process of putting it all back.
i should really just get a newet computer - any ideas on 'basic' requirements?

So Sad.

Assuming you have no serious need for gaming or intensive graphic applications, $600-$800 on a new box and monitor is all you need to spend for something basic.

Of course, you could always spend a couple hundred dollars more for something sexier.

Oooh, sexier. I'd just scrap the whole thing and go for a Mac. It's all you really need.

Don't forget to give it a good name. I'm on Dancing Matilda number 2.

The Titanium Powerbooks are sexy, and so are the mini-atx cases from shuttle.

Too bad all this sex (sic) costs money.

Keep your old computer and install linux - it rocks!

Thanks for the helpful hints.
Any suggestions for processors, memory etc?
I'd love to get a laptop, but then you lose the flexibility to upgrade easily.

I think the upgrading issue is a bit moot.

Consider that most laptops now have a 2+ GHz processor, 256-512mb of ram, 40-80GB hard drive, 32-64MB video, USB 2.0 Ports, Firewire, 15" screen, DVD/CD-RW drives, etc, etc.

Depending on your uses, something like that is more than anyone really needs.

If you needed more hard drive space, you could always get an external one. The Ram slots should be easily accessible, and you could probably upgrade to 1GB if need be. An external monitor and keyboard could be attached at home if you prefer.

The only drawbacks are that the initial cost is significantly higher, part and repair costs are higher and more difficult to do yourself, and battery life is still a paltry 2-3 hours.
